REDUCTION OF SALARIES.
PROPOSALS IN CIVIL SERVICE. A PROTEST FROM TIMARU. By Telegraph —Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. At a large and representative meeting of the local branch of the Post and Telegraph Officers’ Association the following motion was carried unanimously: “That while recognising that great pressure is being brought to bear on the Government by Farmers’ Unions, Employers’ Associations, and others, and against which the Government is apparently powerless, this section is emphatically of opinion that a reduction of salaries of civil servants is wholly unwarranted at the present time. The producers were receiving increased prices for products for a number of years before we received an increase in oUr salaries. We also stress the fact that when the cost of living increased the Government refused to give affect to its verbal understanding with the association to increase salaries. Accordinly civil servants, in common with the rest of the community, must bear their share of increased taxation, both direct and indirect. We therefore resent being singled out as fair game for further special taxation by having our salaries reduce** ’* _
