Landru is hunger-striking, and is suffering from the effects of fatigue and a nervous breakdown, He told a doctor: My machine has run out. Besides the battle lost so far I am concerned in the day to come, when proof of my innocence will be forthcoming. If the Court rejects the verdict I will be re-tried, and if it confirms it I won’t sign the petition for mercy.” Landru then crawled into bed and turned his face to the wall. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
