OUR CHRISTMAS NUMBER THE BEST “YARN". The competition for the best sporting “yarn” produced a large number of stories, interesting and diverting some of them are, and it is not an easy task to award the prize. Several of the stories will appear in the Christinas number, which will be published next There will also be further “Christmas crackers” by “Moturoa”, who also writes a story of the Taranaki turf, “The Moral”. With other features, all redolent of the turf in this province, the sporting pages of the Christmas number of the Daily News should be worpx reading. TURF TOPICS,. (By "MQt’Jroa”.) Bay of Plenty 4&d Otautku races to-day. Big dividends were returned each day at Woodville. When Wairarapa' settles down she will win a good race. Big Chief ran a fair race at Woodville, but Is no champion. On Friday next Taranaki acceptances and Stratford weights are due. The going at Woodville suited Detroit, and the old fellow ’won in good style each day. Asterina has cost her party a lot of money lately through not being quite good enough to reach the post first. Egmont Park shaped splendidly at Waverley and Feilding, and how he was allowed to pay such a tall price on Thursday beats everybody. Another false price was that returned by Anomaly, who came along at the right end of the Woodville Handicap, and just “pipped” the unlucky Kiirush. The high-priced Wheatfield, with A. Reed up, had a big following in tiie Trial Plate at Woodville, but got snowed in, and could only finish third. The next day he finished fourth. Punka’s brother, Nod, by Cooltrim—Drowsy, continues to win races in 'Stralia. Rumor has it that Punka will be equally successful at the holiday meetings here. Mr, T. H. Lowry tore off both two-year-old events at Woodville, Fingoland . (Finland— Aurarius) and Highland (Finland—Warscare) proving too classy for the opposition. “Bill” Lile got a nice second dividend in the Juvenile Handicap with Potoa King, who beat all but Highland. The latter goes like the wind, but Potoa King isn’t troubled with the “slows” either. Wamba, by Absurd—Clntra, made a, pro? cession of tiie Second Hack Hurdles at Woodville, and never gave anything else a chance, though Active made a big effort to reach him in the straight. War Loan isn’t more than a handful, and 11.5 stopped him on Thurst>.y. Opiate, by All Black—Dreamer, ran a good race, and Athens 11, who jumped better than at Feilding, finished close up fourth. Active proved himself to be a capable jumper, and wi tit, Ills pace he should win a lot of Inydle races, particularly at the small meetings. He looks a good proposition fur Christinas racing. Another big dividend payer on Thursday WR& Doucement, by Solferino—Ardour. Site only had 7.5 on her back, and had a “pull” fiT 3(>lbs over Chant Royal, the favorite, so the honors of the race, if not the thick end of the wad, go to the latter. Two jockeys struck troutfle at Woodville. George Young .was relieved of a tenner for breaking a riding engagement, and H. Goldfinch, who rode Chant Royal in the Telegraph Handicap, was suspended for three months for alleged interference with Kilreid. They backed Projector (Formby—Nipple) each day at Woodville, but the big fellow failed to jump out smartly in either race. He shows some pace on the flat, but is a handful for anyone but a strong horseman. What strikes the writer forcibly about recent country meetings Is the blind way in which pumers rush lightweights, never pausing consider whether they are carrying overweights or not. To Taranaki sports, who are used to up-to-date number boards, giziug full particulars of overweights and allowances, the ap-' j pointments at Feilding and wtb

very crude. The other day a horse carrying a stone overweight was sent out one of the favorites, but its backers could not be blamed for assuming that the nag carried the weight on the "correct card”, as“ there was no board in use to acquaint them of the altered condiThey did'not have a great deal of rain at Woodville on> Wednesday and Thursday, though those who motored through the Gorge struck any quantty of it. As the times show, the racing track was in good order, and, the sting being out of the ground, horses like Detroit, Kilrush, Egmont Park and Earthshine were seen in their element. The Woodville Handicap, on the first day, drew a fine field, fifteen being saddled up. Desert Gold’s sister. Aureate, carried a little more money than Stork, and Festivity, Kilrush and Admiral Codrington were the next best backed. The last-named, with Egmont Park and The Speaker, made the early running, and Egmont Park led into the Straight. Kilrush was the first, to cut the leader down, but Anomaly came fast and just got home in front. On Egmont Park's bold showing he should have been better backed on the second -day. Sixteen faced the starter In the Gothard Memorial Handicap on Thursday, Molyneaux being a warm order, with Tari, Kilrush and Admiral Codrington next in order. Egmont Park was ninth favorite, and Aureate had dropped so low in public estimation that she was eleventh fancy. Egmont Park again .took up the role of pacemaker, but Tari, Admiral C’odrington and The Speaker were “on his hammer”. Tari momentarily showed in front along the back, but Egmont Park was in the van again entering the straight. Admiral Codrington immediately challenged, and a great race home ensued, victory going to the Hawera horse by the barest of margins. Molyneaux, who finished very strongly, was a close third, with Bagdad next. On Molyneaux’s form he should be worth watching in longer races at the holiday meetings. After the race there was a queer mishap with the numbers, Mr. Aidworth hoisting Matatua, Egmont Park and Admiral Codrington as the place-getters, and the crowd “demonstrated” very strongly. Mr. Aidworth was at a loss to understand the crowd’s action, and after a little delay found out that the number hoisted on top was that of the previous winner, which he had overlooked to remove before adding Egmont Park’s number. It was purely a mistake. W. L. Lloyd, a jockey well known in the

South Island. Is at present attached to F. Mantle's stables at New Plymouth, He cau go to scale at Bst.
