H.M.S. CHATHAM.
VISIT TO NEW PLYMOUTH. COMMEMORATIVE FUNCTION PROPOSED. The H.M.S. Chatham will be at New Plymouth from February 20 to 28. The New Plymouth Harbor Board were notified of the impending visit by a letter from the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) at yesterday’s meeting of the board. The ship will be open to visitors in. the afternoons. The harbormaster (Captain Wm. Waller) reported that he was prepared to berth the vessel if the deep sea berth was not occupied by a liner. Mr. Bellringer said this would be the first time a man-o’-war had been berthed at New Plymouth, and he thought some function should be arranged, as it would be a big advertisement for the port. Mr. Wilkinson supported the suggestion. It was decided to inform the Mayor that the board would be pleased to cooperate with the borough authorities in any function that might be arranged. The question of organising a distinctive function was left over to the next meeting of the board.
