P. AND T. SALARIES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Dec. 8. The local branch of the P. and T. Officers’ Association passed a resolution strongly protesting against a reduction in salaries at the present time, and that the branch will support the association executive in any action taken the frustrate the efforts made in the direction of making the members of the service subject to a special tax, taking into consideration the fact that they have already to carry an equal burden of taxation with the rest of the community, and remembering that the Government has recently granted a 10 per cent, rebate on land-tax to the wealthy landed proprietors of the Dominion. The meeting was also convinced that a reduction in salaries was unjustifiable until the Government Statistician can officially publish figures warranting a decrease, in accordance with the arrangements entered into with the Premier.
RAILWAYS CONSTRUCTION. Wellington, Dec. 8. A representative deputation of the Canterbury, West Coast and Nelson members of Parliament waited on the Minister of Public Works htis morning to urge the completion of the South Island Main Trunk Railway, with special reference to the Glenhope—lnangahua gap of 60 miles. The Minister replied that he could not say anything definite - until the Public Works Statement came down. It was estimated that to fill the Glenhope—lnangahua and Westport gaps would cost, about £2,300,000. He admitted that improved returns were secured from through lines, and said it was his intention to ask the Government to carry on a policy of concentration.
