NEW PARTY IN POWER. PREMIER DEFEATED. VICTORY FOR LIBERALS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dee. 8, 8.20 p.m. ’ Ottawa, Dec. 7. The final returns show that the Liberals overwhelmed the Government, taking 121 seats, the Conservatives S 3, the farmers 58, and the Independents 2. The Premier (Mr. A. Meighen) lost his seat, with seven other members of the Cabinet. Ontario, which is usually a Conservative stronghold, elected Mr. McKenzie King as Liberal leader. Miss Macpba.il (Progressive) was elected for the south-west Grey district, Ontario., She is the first woman member of the House of Commons. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. / Ottawa, Dec. 6. Early returns of the Canadian elections indicate that the Liberals are making heavy gains in the eastern provinces. Several Ministers of the present Government have been defeated. The Farmers’ Party appears to be weak and the Liberals strong in Ontario, w'here they had not expected to make gains. Mr. Mackenzie King, the Liberal leader, has been elected. Returns from 55 of the 235 seats show 44 Liberals returned, 9 Conservatives, 2 Farmers’ Party. Later election returns are: Liberals 120, Conservatives 43, Farmers $7, Labor 2. The chief issue of the election is the tariff. The Liberals are advocating a tariff for revenue only, and the Conservatives a high tariff, preaching against economic domination by the United States. Mr. Meighen appears to be losing in his own riding.
