POLITICS IN AUSTRALIA.

SALARIES OF MEMBERS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Dec. 8 ; 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Dec. 8. The House of Representatives, by 51 votes to 9, adjourned the debate on the Convention Bill, virtually shelving it. Mr. Fowler proposes to move an amendment to Dr. Earle Page’s motion to reduce salaries by suggesting a sliding scale in accordance with the distance travelled, members within two hours of Parliament to receive £6OO, 12 hours £7OO, and others £BOO. A paragraph referring to exchange in the Anti-Dumping Bill, which was agreed to, provides that if the exchange value in the exporting country is depreciated, enabling the Australian importer to buy at prices detrimental to Australian industry, an exchange duty may be imposed. A short Bill has been introduced providing that no person shall be eligible for nomination for the House of Representatives or the Senate if a member of a State Parliament or possessed of the right under a State law to be reappointed in the event of a defeat at the Federal contest. The Bill is a counterblast to State legislation, enabling sitting members to contest Federal vacancies.
