TEACHERS’ SALARIES.

QUESTION OF REDUCTION. STATEMENT BY PREMIER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Replying to a deputation from the Educational Institute, which gave reasons why there should be no reductions in teachers’ salaries, Mr. Massey said the financial difficulty had to be faced, though the task was not a pleasant one. When increases were made last year the system adopted with teachers was different from that adopted with other branches of the service, and he saw no reason why the same system should not apply in making reductions. It was not this year he was anxious about, but the year following. Teachers would not find that he would attempt anything that he could possibly avoid.
