Mr. G. A. Lee, of Messrs. Blair-Mason, Lee and Owen, left by the Rarawa last night for the North Auckland district.

Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. (Taranaki), was on Monday granted four days’ leave of absence from the House on the grounds of illness.

Mr. J. D. Henry, who visited New Plymouth twice some years ago in connection with the petroleum industry, upon which he is the author of several works, is now operating at Parson’s jPond, Newfoundland, where oil has been found and is being won in considerable quantity. The Rev. Grigg, president of the New Zealand Methodist conference, has received a cable stating that the Rev. Grainger Hargreaves, a distinguished Minister, will represent the British conference at the New Zealand Methodist centenary celebrations next February. Dr. Wardle Stafford, who was previously selected, is unable to make the jour-ney.—-Press Assn. Mr. G. G. Aitken, of Victoria College, has been selected as a. Rhodes scholar. He was born in 1-898 at Westport, trained at the district High School of Wtestport and at Victoria College, where he passed his B.A. He has a notable athletic record, having captained New Zealand against the Springboks in first and second tests, and was also captain of the university team which visited Sydey.— Press Assn.

The marriage of Mr. Leslie W. Cole, eldest son of Constable H. Cole, of Palmersten North, and Miss Constance M. Aspindll, youngest daughter of Mr. W. 11. Aspinall, of Romford, England, was celebrated in that village on September 17. Mr'. Ia W. Cole, who was wellknown both in Palmerston North and in New Plymouth, went to the front with the eighth reinforcements and gained his promotion to sergeant after the battle of the iSomme. Later he was invalided back to New Zealand, but returned to the front with the 25th reinforcements, and won the Military Medal for his work at Arinentieres. After his final discharge in New Zealand Mr. Cole returned to England, and is aC present employed by the Great Eastern Railway Company at their Stratford works.
