BOROUGH MATTERS.

NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. RATEPAYERS’ REQUESTS. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) and Crs. J. Kibby, T. N. Blackball, E. Dingle, R. A. Large, J. Brown. R. L. Parkin, W. Rumball, and V. Griffiths. The thorough engineer reported, that fresh gradients had been calculated for James Lane. He stated that owing to the conflicting interests, the numerous different levels of gates and doorways, uo alternative seemed’ apparent but to leave the present various gradients more or Ipss as they are now. Various gradients were- shown on an attached plan. —The council will again confer with the owners concerned. Dealing with an application from Mr. Abbot for permanent levels in front of his property in Courtney Street east, th* -borough engineer wrote:—“As we have numerous inquiries all over the borough for such levels, I ask for some instruction how to deal with the matter. Many persons want to erect walls and do not care to take the risk of alterations later on if the road or path is altered.” The engineer added that much extra work would be entailed in doing this. —The council decided to grant the application, of Mr. Abbot and to supply him with the levels. Cr. Griffiths pointed out that any ratepayer was entitled to have, the correct levels, and it was the council’s duty to supply them. The iborough reported: “I understand that quarrying will practically cease very shortly in the gaol quarry. There is an amount of gravel of fair quality lying in the pit. I recommend some arrangement be made with the authorities, whereby the council has sole right to remove such.”—The engineer was instructed to report as to quantity and terms.

The desire of residents of Dorset Avenue to obtain connection with the water supply was .renewed in a further application. —The council discussed fully means of doing the work, and the engineer was instructed to present a further report on the matter. The question of the formation of Pioneer Road was briefly discussed and I referred to a committee for a report. It 1 was pointed out that at present there was no proper road or footpath, and while the cost would not permit of both it was suggested that at least a footpath should be provided. A copy of a letter from the Minister of Agriculture was received regarding the suggestion that legislation should be passed expressly permitting the establishment of boiling down works at local authorities’ abattoirs. The matter could not be taken up this session, but the whole position would be carefully reviewed before the next session of Parliament. The secretary of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers asked the council to grant facilities to enaible the borough engineer to attend the next annual general meeting of the society.— Mr. Cook was granted permission to attend conditionally. The.Sta* Oil Co. (Wellington) sought a license to store benzine in the iron shed belonging the Taranaki Oil Wells at Moturoa.
