SUBSTANTIAL DECREASES MADE OPERATIVE IMMEDIATELY. GOOD NEWS FOR PRODUCERS. Welcome newp was contained in telegrams received by Messrs. Collett and Co. and Newton King, Ltd., yesterday. The nicHHages contained an announcement of reductions in freight, which, it Im announced, will apply to all steamer* now loading in New Zealand. ihese “eductions exceed what is justified by the present cost of working steamers, the messages add, and are made in anticipation of a reduction in expenses in the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
The following table gives an idea pf what the new reduced freights will mean,, a comparison being given in parentheses with the freight rates previously in operation: Mutton, pork, veal and lamb (over 42 lbs.) I%<( per lb. (formerly l%d); lamb Ifd (2d); beef l%d (IJd); boned beef and sundries in cases or crates. l%d (l%d); in bags Ifkl (2d); legs, shoulders and pieces, in bags, Igd (2d); rabbits 130/- per ton (I€O/-). These were formerly all subject to 5 per cent, primage. Now the percentage is 2J. . Cheese, 1 3-16 d plus 10 per cent. (l£d plus 10 per cent.). Butter. 5/’ per box nett (6/- nett). General cargo: Kauri gum, 135/- ton (162/6); tallowy, pelts and hides, in. casks, 142/6 (162/6); peas and oats 60/- (58/-). These rates are calculate 1. on weight and the original primage of 10 per cent, still stands. Other general items include bran 70/(weight calculation) and fruit 6/- per box nett.
