WAITARA.

THE WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Dec. 5. A retailers’ meeting in connection with the half-holiday was held on Thursday evening last, when the matter of petitioning Parliament for permission to take a poll in April next for reversion or otherwise to Thursday was considered. The Mayor thought there was very little chance of anything being done this session to bring about the desired end. A general discussion ensued for and against the change, but the general opinion was that, it would be disastrous to Waitara if New Plymouth reverted to Thursday and Waitara held Saturday. It was resolved to canvass the district for signatures to the petition, Mr. A. E. Hawkins being appointed to do the work, and when the same is complete a further meeting will be held. . GENERAL. The Seaside and Surf Bathing Society’s sheds being in immediate danger by encroachment of the sea, it was deemed ad- | visable to get. to work without delay to build a wall with sand-bags. On Friday and Saturday last the committee, with other willing workers, put in some good work, although there remains even yet a good deal to. be done before the sheds are out of danger. The committee are experiencing trouble in securing bags, of which at, least 1000 or so are required. The society would be pleased to hear from those who can help in this direction.
