FARMERS’ UNION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) December 3. At the monthly meeting of the Mahaia branch of the Farmers’ Union, held on Friday evening, and presided over by Mr. J. Dakers (president)., further i arrangements were made in regard to , the proposed cattle show. The secretary (Mr. R. G. Muggaridge) reported that at a meeting of the committee it was decided to recommend ; that the executives of the various I branches in the district be written to, asking them for lists of their members; also that the support of leading breeders be solicited. He suggested that the dairy companies and co-operative firms be asked for contributions to the prix Mr. J. W. Deans (Fields Instructor) wrote consenting to act as judge of the root crop and lucerne competitions. The following entries were received for the competitions:—Mangolds, 8; carrots,. 11; swedes, 14; lucerne, first and second years 5, old stands 3. The chairman introduced the question of larm rents, and suggested that these should bear a relation to the price of butter-fat. f After discussion, the following resolution was passed: —“That this branch of the Farmers’ Union strongly recommends a reduction of rents on leasehold farms and the adoption of a sliding scale according to the price of butter-fat and quality of land. We believe this to be in the interests of farmers and. the dairying industry, in view of present world-wide conditions.” It was also resolved that other I branches be communicated with, asking them to support the resolution.
