McMillan) presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Rawles, Abraham, Robinson, Lyons, ■ Budge, Hine and Massey. { The annual report stated that during 1 the preceding year the Reserve had, as ; usual, taken charge of the decoration of | the roll of honor and the placing of j wreaths n u soldiers’ graves on Anzae I Day, being assisted by the children of ' the Stratford District High School, St. Mary’s School and Convent School. During the year Stratford had withdrawn from the National Council. A valuable member was lost during the year, when Mrs. Hollands left Stratford, and, in conjunction with the Plunket Society, the Reserve had entertained Mrs. Hollands to a farewell afternoon tea. The reserve had organised a street appeal in aid of the residential nursery, Wellington, the sum of £l3 Ils being realised. During the week the War Trophies. Exhibition was in Stratford the reserve had assisted the Borough Council in carrying out the exhibition. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2 5s 9d. It was decided, after discussion, that the Stratford branch should be disbanded and that all funds should be devoted to the soldiers’ memorial fund. A vote of thanks to Mesdames Martin (president) and Cuthbert (secretary) for their work for the reserve was passed, and Mrs. Martin desired to place on record her thanks to all members for their support during her term of office. GENERAL. The many friends of Mr. C. D. Sole will be glad to hear that he has left the hospital and is well on the way to recovery after his serious illness. A great deal of surprise was caused to-day as the local water-cart turned into Fenton Street, when an eel about a foot long was thrown out of the sprayer on to the roadway. The fish was very much alive, and caused some amusement amongst the bystanders until it was caught. THE KING’S CINEMA THEATRE. “A SMALL TOWN IDOL.” “A Small Town Idol,” Mack Sennett’s great production, comes to the Kings Cinema Theatre, Stratford, on Tuesday night next. With practically every member of his all/fitar aggregation of funny
folk enrolled in a congenial part, there is an. assurance that the comedy will furnish vast entertainment. Ben Turpin is the village hero. Phyllis Haver is his small town ideal; Mario Pefvost is the city girl; Charles Murray is the indefatigable constable; James Finalson is the wretched villain who concocts all the trouble; and Kala Pasha and other Sennett favorites are to be seen advantageously in the shifting scenes that cover as many places as are usually revealed in a half-dozen problem plays wherein the slums and green fields are visited. The comedy is rich in satire and rare in burlesque, and carries enough material for a dozen two-reel offerings. The story value is legitimate, the humor arises from the characterisations and performers. The picture is also decorated with 500 of the Mack Sennett bathing girls. The box plaq is now open at the King’s Theatre office. ' An Albus Portable Typewriter and carrying case for seven pounds is offered by Wilson Bros., Broadway, Stratford ; also a new Corona —the last word in portable typewriters—for seventeen pour Call early and see these machines.
