THE CHRISTMAS MEETING. EXCELLENT NOMINATIONS. Nominations for the Taranaki Jockey Club Christmas meeting closed last nigt* and proved exceptionally good, 390 being received for the sixteen events as against 380 last year, an increase of ten. A very gratifying feature of the increase is that the open races have drawn particularly well, both as regards number and quality of the horses. The Christmas Handicap has attracted twenty-four, as compared with 15 last year, and the Flying has drawn 17. compared with 13. On the second day the New Plymouth Handicap has drawn 30, as compared with 20, and the Inglewood Handicap 20 as compared with 15. The inclusion of the hack races for juveniles has been amply justified, the races having attracted 21 and 24 respectively. The horses nominated represent a much better class than in previous years, nominations having been received from as far north as Auckland and as far south as Christchurch. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa”.) Methven races to-day. Stratford entries on Tuesday. Ngata will win a big handicap shortly. Gloaming and Kyoto were double winners at Feilding. The Woodville J.C. summer meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday. Ore Ore has done a lot of racing lately, and could do with a let-up. *■' Ruddy was backed for a ton of m'onej' at Feilding, but weight once again stopped him. In Wanganui oh Thursday you needed running shoes to be on Zola, but all the big fellow’s backers got was the spike. Taranaki horses won both the hurry-ups at Feilding, Roman (Hgsbandman —Corofiet mare) and Muraahi (Campfire—lneuru) being bred, owned and trained in the province. There was a lot of money for Marqueteur in the sprint, event, at Feilding on Thursday, and he ran well enough (considering the bad passage- he got) to suggest that he will soon be catching the judge’s eye. Judge Cameron was bustled once at Feilding, when he hoisted Earthshine’s number as the winner of the Kowhai Handicap, and the crow.d made rude and loud remarks. However/ he righted the wrong after a little delay, and did not make a further mistake during the rest of the meeting. Mr. A. Grant (Hawera) was present at Feilding to see Voluble run, and fancied the gelding’s chance on Thursday, but fourth position was his share. Y'oiuble should bo all the better for the racing he has had, and will make amends at the holiday meetings, so paste that in your hat. The veteran Detroit made a bold bid for victory in (lie concluding event at Feilding on Thursday, and though capably handled by G. C. Young (a son of the Wanganui trainer, J. Young) could not make anj’ impression on the odds-on favorite. Rose Wreath, who won practically all the way. Pluto could not quite see the mile and a half out in the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding; but 8.10 is a big weight for a three-year-old, and Paoanui and Egmont Park, who finished in front of him, were in receipt of 121bs and 261bs respectively. Pluto is a good horse, but a mile and a quarter seems to be his best distance at the present time. When Celniisia won the Fitzroy Hack Handicap on Wednesday her rider, H. Ryder, claimed a 51b allowance, which reduced her impost to 9.6. On the second day the handicapper hoisted her weight to 10.8—an extraordinary rise—and Mr. Gaisford declined the honor. The appointments at Feilding are just about as inconvenient as it is possible to make them. Occupants of the members’ stand (including Pressmen) have to trail downstairs to find out what are starting in the forthcoming race, and the out-of-date jockeys board, with its handwritten names and numbers, was placed so high up (on the top storey, as a matter of fact) that most people got a pain in the neck trying to decipher its hieroglyphics. There was a big crowd at Feilding each day, including many Taranaki sports, but nobody had much money, and the tote figures slumped frightfully. The club must have lost heavily over the meeting, and while the financial depression lasts racing clubs should keep their stakes within reasonable limits, exercising their right to appeal to the Racing Conference to apply the pruning knife if neces-

In Pirouette (Boniform—Peirene) Mr. A. Alexander has a beautifully built two-year-old, which shows speed; but she will have to mend her manners at the barrier to have a chance in five-furlong races. Such a beautifully bred one could hardly fail to prove good. Paoanui, who created a surprise by winning the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Feilding, cannot be accused of consistency. Her Feilding form was as good as her Ashhurst form was bad. Being perfectly sure that horses always race to win, we must blame the weather, or the going, or the music supplied by the band, I suppose! Gloaming has now captured the Feilding Stakes and the Oroua Stakes two years in succession, and his victories this week were merely exercise gallops. Gloaming is now in his sixth year, and retains ills brilliancy in remarkable fashion. It will be many years before his equal as a sprinter will Le seen in the Dominion. There was no waiting in tlie Cheltenham Hurdles at Feilding, Ngakanui (the outsider of nine runners) leading the field a merry dance, and only going .under to Kyoto in the final stages, after a stirring struggle. Ngakanui paid a fine second dividend. I Asterina was' a strong order in the York ■ Handicap, and after Nursing Sister, Amber j Tips, Inah and Y'oiuble had flattered their supporters in turn, assumed the lead in the straight, but could not stall off Kinsem’s late n'.n. Considering Kinsem’s bold showing on the opening day she was allowed Lu pay a Big Chief (Mountain Knight—Swallow) was the big boom in the Novice Stakes, but after piloting the field to the straight faded clean out of the picture. Muraahi, with Ashley Reed up, then llew past and won easily from Lady Nassau, who also improved on her first day's running, with Whlritas and Bedloguc .close up. Whiritas is a big, strong three-year-old gelding by Kilbroney—Equitas, owned and

ored by Mr. “Sammy" Gibbons. He is not half ready yet, but will be a beauty later on. Whiritas is trained by Fred Tilley. To most people’s surprise, Dainty Step was produced in the Manchester Handicap on Thursday, in preference to the shorter race, but the public made her a warm favorite all the same. Fsetivity, Trespass and Egmont Park also came in for solid support. Egmont Park and Matatua were again responsible for the pace, but gave way to Dainty Step entering the straight. Her run was a bit premature, however, and when- Orrell called on Trespass the imported gelding quickly settled the favorite. Festivity finished on better than the first day, and was a good third, just in front of Lovematch. Helen Rufus (A. Reed) was best backed of eighteen runners in the Nikau Hack Handicap, and should have won. Mida led Valley Rose to -the straight, where the latter came away and just lasted long enough to beat Helen Rufus—who was galloping over everything—by the narrowest of margins. Lady Kotiripo, who went well for S. Anderson, was a close third, and Lord Usk fourth. Awake again failed miserably. His form at the meeting was inexplicable.. Gloaming was opposed by Tommy Rot, Hula Girl and Y'alerie in the Oroua Stakes, and carried practically all of the trifling tote investments on the race. Hula Girl led off from Gloaming, and the pair ran into the straight together, where Gloaming easily forged ahead and did the rest. Tommy Kot and Hula Girl had a good- tussle for second money, the former prevailing by a head. Valerie was a bad last. Twenty lined up for the Rongotea Hack Handicap, Kuia (A. Reed), Zircon (J. Barry) and Malingerer (H. Goldfinch) being best backed. There was an unholy jumble at the barrier, and the crowd eventually left in disorder. Zero • Hour, Notawede and Equitable made the most of the start, but VVarrawee, Blissfulness and Malingerer closed up nearing the home turn. In a punishing finish Malingerer, Blissfulness and W#rrawee passed the post almost in line, Mr. Cameron placing them in that order—half-heads apart. Both winner and runner-up returned good dividends. Nothing but Rose Wreath was called for in the concluding event, the Empire Welter, and the nAney rained in for her so strong’y at the finish that she started at a slight shade of odds on.
