Greek warships stopped and searched an Italian steamer south of Corfu, and di covered nine aeroplanes and 2,500,000 Mauser cartridges. They arrested a disguised Turkish colonel among the stokers. The shipment was consigned to Adalia. JOHANNESBURG STRIKE. Capetown, Nov. 28. The Johannesburg Crown mines’ strike will probably be settled on the basis o-f the suggestion by the Minister of Mines that the dismissed bosses have the right to interview the management in the presence of Government officials. A conference is to be held to settle the relations between the management and the officials, who are members of the trade unions.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. AN OLD MINING DISASTER. London, Nov. 29. Miners in the Prince of Wales’ colliery at Abercarn broke through an old working and found the remains of many of the 263 victims of an explosion which occurred in September, 1878. The explosion was so terrific that few bodies were recovered at the time. COVENT GARDEN OPERA. London, Nov. 28. Madame Payling, formerly Madame Huffeno, and E. D. Smith, of Sydney, with a few others, are negotiating with a view to purchasing Covent Garden Opera House, and are awaiting a reply to a definite offer. Madam Payling believes there is every possibility of running opera successfully, despite previous failures.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. LOUVAIN LIBRARY APPEAL. London, Nov. 29. , The Times Brussels correspondent says that the response to the appeal for the restoration of Louvain Library has exceeded all expectations. Twenty-five thousand volumes have already been received and 45,000 more are promised from France. With private gifts France’s contribution exceeds £lOO,OOO.
