TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

MEETING OF THE BOARD. The advisory board of the New Plymouth Technical College met last evening. Present: Messrs. G. H. Dolby (chairman), W. G. Reid, E. H. Tribe, F. Duckworth, F. N. Blackhall, R. J. Deare and the director (Mr. A. L. Moore). Apologies were received from Messrs. J. S. Connett, P. J. H. White and F. S. Cobham. The chairman reported that he and the director had waited on the Trades and Labor Council to place before them the facilities for technical education. They received a very attentive hearing, and keen interest was shown in the progress and development of education, as was evidenced by the questions put to the speakers. It was decided to appoint a representative of the Trades and Labor Council on. the advisory board. The question of the formation of a board of managers was discussed. Mr. Dolby moved: "That as this advisory board learns v that in other centres—e.g., Wanganui and Nelson —boards of managers have been formed without waiting for the gazetting of regulations defining the respective powers of fontrolling authorities and boards of managers, they see no reason why the Taranaki Education Board cannot forward their request for a similar board, with a request that immediate steps be taken to do so.” This was seconded by Mr. Tribe. He said he had been a member jaf the advisory board for a number of years, and was keen and anxious, as were other members of the board, to forward the interests of technical education, but they felt and knew that they had absolutely no power or standing, and, consequently, no incentive to push the claims of technical education in New Plymouth as they should be pushed. Other members also spoke in similar strain, pointing out that the affairs of the State now demanded that Advantage should be taken of every facility—of which technical education was of great importance—to. tide them over present difficulties. The motion was carried unanimously. It was resolved that the matter of asking for a supplementary grant for the hostel be left in the hands of the chairman and director, >and that the Education Board be asked to have necessary renovations to the school done during the Christmas vacation.
