“COMPLETE DEVOTION.”
LONG SERVICE FOR SMALL PAY. A REMARKABLE CASE. By Telegraph—Press Association! Christchurch, Last Night. An extraordinary case of a woman who in ,1887 entered the service of a couple in Wooiston, and remained in their service for 24 years, nursing the wife through a lingering illness until her death, and for a remuneration of 9/3 a week, was told at the Supreme Court to-day before Mr. Justice Adams and a jury of twelve. “I have never seen a finer example of complete devotion,” said a medical witness. Margaret Currie proceeded against the executors of the will and codicil of Annie Hawker, late of Woolsrton, widow, claiming £863 I9s 3d. The claim was for a reasonable rate of payment for plaintiff’s services, assessed at £2 2s weekly, less 9/3 for the first two years of Mrs. Hawker’s widowhood, and £3- 3s weekly for the subsequent years of service, less again the 9/3 paid. It was stated that during the nine years Miss Currie had come to Christchurch only five times, and these trips were to get clothing. Plaintiff had never during all those years been to a picture entertainment or to a theatre. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £B3l 16s 3d.
