DISTRICT NEWS.
MOKAU—AWAKING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the' Mokau Factory was held recently, at which several matters connected with butter were dealt with. Mrs. Reid, with her family, arrived on Wednesday, and proceeded up the river the next day Io join her husband, who is dairy farming. Mokau River settlement is going ahead, and we expect to soon see the settlers there with a school, post office and hall of their own. They are sending about 1250 lbs of cream to the factory each trip. Mr. Murray, Public Works inspecting engineer, Is at present in Awakino on business connected with the Awakino Valley Road, where good progress is being made. Mrs. Geo. Sage, wl:o has been visiting Mrs. Mour.tt, Mokau River, has returned home. Miss Mattie Randell Is visiting Mrs. Raven, Mokau River. The Awakino Tennis Club’s court is nearing competion. We recently noticed two energetic young members of the Awakino Beautifying Society busy with pick and shove/, doing good work amongst posts and post-noits. The horses Dramatist, Key, Kariri, Te K«W::u, and others, are doing good work preparatory to the Awakino races <?n Monday next. Amongst them is to be noticed a likeiy-looK-ing dark bay with black points, a fine horse, and a likely winner. Mr. Ken Macdonald, of Wellington, is visiting Ids father, Mr. J. L. Macdonald, harbormaster, Mokau. Mr. S. Whitehead has left for a business trip to Taranaki per mail car. Shearing is over at Mohakatino station, and the gang has proceeded to Mr. Duncan's (Bexley), where they expect to finish, weather permitting, in about nine days. The weather is very changeable.
