WAITARA.
CLIFTON ROWING CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Nov. 25. The annual meeting of the Clifton Rowing Club was held on Tuesday last, the attendance being small. The hall has a debit of £35 15s 4d, and £5O owing on the piano, but the balance of assets over liabilities is £336 8s 7d. The following' officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr. A. W. Ogle; vice-presidents, Dr. Allison, Mr. C. H. Johnston, Mr. J. Cain; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. Spurdie; auditor, Mr. A. W. Ogle; committee, Messrs. T. Campbell, F. Clare, W. Spurdie, F. It was resolved that a series of socials be arranged during the winter months in aid of the hall funds. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. H. Spurdie for his services as secretary and hall custodian. SEA EROSION. The Waitara Seaside Society’s concrete bathing sheds are causing concern through the encroachment of the sea. They were built well behind the sand hills, and it was never thought that they would ever be in danger. The sand hills have disappeared, and the sea now reaches within a few feet of the sheds. It is hoped that the society, who are not getting much support from the community, will be able to save the sheds by carrying out some protective work. BEACH RACING CLUB. The meeting called for Wednesday evening for the purpose of forming a beach racing club was well attended, close on forty being present. Mr. E. George was voted to the chair. It was decided that a club be formed. The question of the name of the club was discussed, eventually resulting in the selection of the “Waitara Beach Racing Club”. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P.; president, Mr. E. George; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. N. Skelton, Den. George, R. H. Pepperell, A. Keith, F. Locke, Les. Birdling, D. McPherson; secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. Bird; committee, Messrs. A. Abbott, W T . Turner, A. Lock, Ed. Pepperell, T. Fowler, S. Reid, J. Johnson, F. Locke, R. Parli, G. Nicholls, L. Pepperell, G. N. Skelton, W. Nosworthy, E. Beckbessinger, C. Cole. It was resolved that the races be held on the Waipapa Beach, the 'date to be fixed as near the Uruti meeting as possible.
The membership fee was fixed at 5-. About 100 have already signified their intention of becoming members. A permit is to be applied for straight away. SEASIDE SOCIETY. The meeting called to re-organise the Waitara Seaside Society was poorly attended, and those remaining of the old committee are discouraged by the way the community treat their seaside. The ranks of a few enthusiasts who put in hard work to improve the foreshore many years ago have been depleted, and it is hoped “new blood” will come forwhtrd to save an asset to the town. A final appeal will be made to re-organise, a further meeting being held on Monday next in the council chambers, and it is hoped that a strong committee will be got together to carry on the good work. The balance-sheet showed receipts £47 10s and expenditure £lO 10s 9d, leaving a balance in hand of £36 19s 3d. PERSONAL. Thirty-three years secretary. This is the good record held by Mr. H. Spurdie, who was re-elected by the Clifton Rowing Club on Tuesday evening last. Mr. Thos. Bell has decided to sever his connection with the Waitara Freezing Works, and retire. Mr. Bell was with Messrs. T. Borthwicks for 25 years. Mr. T. Campbell, who was elected to the position of captain o rhe Clifton Rowing Club, conics to Waitara with knowledge of the sport, he having been associated with the Waitemata Club. The club will also have the assistance of Messrs. Ross, Hickey and Fryday, all well-known athletes.
