EVADING THE CUSTOMS.
A HEAVY FINE IMPOSED. THE GOODS FORFEITED. . By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Nov. 25. Rudolph Friedlander was fined £lOO in the Police Court on a charge of making an erroneous declaration to the Customs with respect to new carpets. Defendant’s counsel pleaded guilty, stating that his client had acted very foolishly. The Collector of Customs stated that defendant, on returning from England, had his luggage passed. Then a bale of goods arrived, transhipped from Melbourne. Mr. Friedlander declared that he was quite sure there were no new goods in the bale, that they were carpets that had been in his possession for two or three years and worth under £lOO. When his attention was called to the makers’ names on the carpets he said they were the names of the cleaners in London. He was refused delivery of the carpets and next day he admitted he had made a mistake. The carpets were valued at £ 1'26. The Magistrate imposed a penalty of £lOO and declined to consider a request for remission, saying that defendant was a welbto-do man. The carpets were forfeited.
