FIRE AT FITZROY.
BAKER’S STABLE GUTTED. r THREE VEHICLES DESTROYED. A fire broke out in a two-storey stable at the rear of the premises of Mr. G. H. Gallaher, baker, Fitzroy, about- 1.15 this morning. The building was gutted, while the woodwork of two carts and a gig was destroyed, as well as a quantity of chaff and other stores. The reflection was first noticed by the workmen at the tramway shed, who gave the alarm. When they arrived on the scene the flames had a good hold of the building, but the Fitzroy brigade, under Captain R. L. Parkin, quickly turned out, and did splendid work, confining the outbreak to the stable. The flames swept throughout the building, burning the woodwork of the vehicles, destroyed several tons of chaff and other goods, while the building itself was completely gutted. The origin of the fire is a mystery, as the day’s work was completed and the stables locked up in daylight, when everything was left safe. It is understood that the insurances are light, and that Mr. Gallaher will be a heavy loser.
