PRINCE IN INDIA.
VISITS NATIVE STATE. A WONDERFUL SCENE. A BRILLIANT PAGEANT. By Telegraph.—Pres* Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 24, 5.5 p.m. Delhi, Nov. 23. The Prince of Wales has arrived at Baroda, where he was given the first glimpse of the splendours of a native State. He was welcomed by the Gaekwar of Baroda with all the traditional ceremonial, and driven through befiagged and garlanded streets. The day has been one of glittering pageantry in a great scene of Oriental brilliance. The Prince, here in the midst of an Indian population, was received by the State troops’ guards o 5 honor in gala dress and on elephants covered with gold cloth and bearing jewelled howdahs, and batteries of gold and silver guns drawn up before the Laximi Villas (the Gaekwar’s palace), with rows of silver carriages and caparisoned. horses. The Gaekwar’a State jewels, including diamonds valued at more than £3.000.000, were on view. The entire population was massed on the roadways from the station to the palace, waving a welcome and cheering as the Prince passed. At a reception officials made offerings of gold to the Prince, who touched them and remitted i them to the donors. The Gaekwar garlanded the Prince with a gold chain, which drooped nearly to his feet. Subsequently His Royal Highness was entertained at a garden party unlike any he had ever attended before, and this was followed by a State banquet, which was also a brilliant function.—Aus.-N.Z.
