THE NEW TARIFF.
POSITION OF INDUSTRIES. MANUFACTURERS DISSATISFIED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington- Last Night. About fifty manufacturers, representing the majority of industries of the Dominion, met here to-day for the purpose of giving consideration to the tariff. Mr. Ward, chairman of the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand, who presided, mentioned the altered position in regard to Australia. He said industries were still adversely affected by tbe tariff, and must press for fair treatment. The conference resolved to request the Government to appoint a tariff revision committee, consisting of the Commissioner of Customs, the chief executive officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce, and the president of the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand. It was mentioned that in some cases the New Zealand tariff was lower than the Australian, and that .manufacturers would prefer to send goods to New Zealand, overstocking tbe market to her detriment. Local manufacturers resolved that a deputation should wait on the Premier regarding questions of tariff revision and preventing dumping; also for further consideration of No. 1 schedule of the tariff, in which Canada, South Africa and other British Dominions' remained (except Australia). The resolution adopted last week was that only the United Kingdom should be left in No. 1 schedule. THE IRON INDUSTRY. PROTEST FROM DUNEDIN. Dunedin, Last Night. At a representative meeting of the Otago Ironmasters’ Association to-night considerbale disappointment was expressed at the lack of consideration shown to the iron industry and allied trades throughout New Zealand, notwithstanding the favorable recommendations made by the Industries Committee, and also the sympathetic hearing accorded by the Tariff Commission. It was felt that the failure to give due recognition to the secondary industries would be the means of further increasing the lack of employment. It was urged that the general tariff should apply to all imports from Australia. The following resolution was carried- to be forwarded to the Prime Minister: “That this meeting of ironmasters strongly urges that the duty on all Australian manufactures be levied under the general tariff column.”
