Mr. E. W. M. Lysons has been nominated as one of the Taranaki church trustees to fill the vacancy caused by the departure of Mr. J. Paton.

A London cablegram reports that Sir Sydney Beauchamp has been killed by a motor bus.

The Empire Exhibition Executive is sending Major Belcher as Special Commissioner to the overseas Dominions to promote their interest in the scheme. The death is reported from London of Mr. Hemy Wilson-Fox, M.P. Mr. Wil-son-Fox was a director of the British South African Company and vice-presi-dent of the Royal Geographical Society. Archbishop Cattaneo, Papal delegate visiting Australia and New Zealand, arrived in New Plymouth last night after a visit to Hawera and other Taranaki towns. To-day he will visit Mount Egmont, and will leave for Auckland tonight. In the recent Canterbury College engineering examinations for associate of the school of engineering, Mr. L. M. Allan, an old pupil of the New Plymouth Technical College, gained four first class passes, including two with credit, an exceptionally good performance. He is now awaiting the results of his 15 days’ drawing test, which will complete his examination.

Mrs. K. Mams, one of the earliest residents of New Plymouth, passed away at her residence in Surrey Street, Ponsonby, on Monday. She was born 63 years ago at Oxford, and arrived with her parents by the ship Avalancha 47 years since, landing at New Plymouth.

A number of shipmasters in the Union Company’s employ have been retired, owing to depression of trade. Among those who have recently resigned from the company’s service are Captains Hopkins (ex Kittawa), A. McLellan (who has been standing by . the Kaikorai. which is laid up at Wellington), C. Elders (ex Corinna), and Chadwick (ex Kittawa). Captains McLellan and Hop\?iins are proceeding to Sydney.
