STATE CONTROL.
THE TRADE’S VIEW. By Telegraph Association. Wellington, Nov. 23. Tn reply to the statement made by the Rev. W. J. Comrie at the Presbyterian Assembly regarding the elimination of the State control issue, Mr. J. R. Raw, secretary of the National Council of the Licensed Trade, said the trade had not made any proposals whatever in connection with the matter. They fully recognised the right of those electors who approved of State control having a means of expressing their opinion lat the ballot-box, and for this reason they were strongly opposed to eliminating the issue, and would not. under any circumstances, make the franchise of electors the medium for political bargaining. The prohibition party were doing their utmost to have the State control issue removed from the ballot paper, and if they were successful Mr. Comrie and his party must take the whole responsibility for disfranchising over 3’2,(MM) electors. He wished to give a clear and emphatic denial to the statement that the licensed trade, described by Mr. Comrie as “the other side,” had made any proposals to Mr. Massey or contemplated entering into any bargain whatever about the issue of State control.
