ALLEGED ARSON.
x RIVALRY OF SHOP-KEEPERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 23. In the Magistrate’s Court Erie Randolph Chamberlain was committed to the Supreme Court for trial on a charge of arson. The police said accused had been keeping a greengrotfer’s shop at Kilbirnie and found some difficulty in making the -business pay in face of Chinese opposition. It was alleged that he purchased a tin of kerosene, and early the following morning the shop of a Chinese rival was found to be on fire. When the fire brigade was summoned they found the door of the shop satu- ■ rated with kerosene. Evidence was given that accused made a statement to the police that he set fire to the shop as he was unable to compete with the low prices of the Chinaman and devised this means of disposing of a rival. Accused pleaded not guilty.
