GENERAL ITEMS. Nov. 21. ' The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) presided last night at a meeting of citizens at the Stratford Borough Council Chambers, to consider the best manner in which to suitably recognise the services of the headmaster of the Stratford District High School, Mr. F. Tyrer, who is retiring at the end of the year. There was a representative attendance, and the meeting was an enthusiastic one. It was decided that all present should be a general committee, with power to carry out arrangements. The following executive committee was appointed to control the function: Mrs. C. Martin, Miss Papps, Messrs. J. .W. Boon, D. J. Malone, A. E. Copping, R. H. Cameron, D. Clark, P. Thompson, E. Walter (Stratford County Council), N. R. Cleland (Whangamomona County Council) and P. Skoglund (honorary secretary). Miss Papps stated that the school intended making a ' presentation on December 14. It was decided that the presentation should take place at a conversazione to be held in the Town Hall on December 15. The Misses Skoglund, daughters of Mr. P. Skoglund, will leave Stratford to-morrow with their aunt, Miss R. Croft, on a trip to Australia. They will leave for Australia by the Maheno, which leaves Wellington on Wednesday, and will be away several months. Arrangements for the Stratford Show are running on without a hitch, and the show promises to be an unqualified success. A sensation will be provided in the shape of a leaping motor-car, which makes a jump of 16 feet, carrying passengers. The usual big variety of 'sideshows will be present with their “wonders”, and the event will only need fine weather to make it a success. The Stratford Musical Society’s two concerts on the show nights promise to be musical treats. Selections from comic opera will be one feature of the items rendered by the local singers, and there will be an added attraction in the appearance both evenings of Miss Teresa McEnroe, a well-known Wellington singer, to whom the critics have given high praise of late. Booking is at Grubb’s, and intending patrons are advised to lose no time in securing seats.
The school examina''on, with the exception of the scholarship examinations, will not be held at the Stratford School on show days. At the show grounds next Wednesday and Thursday the Plunket Society will conduct a rest tent in the charge of Mrs. McLean and assistants, where mothers may leave their babies while inspecting the show. Demonstrations will be given of preparing humanised milk, and arrangements have been made for heating bottles. “SNOWY” FLYNN’S BIG ATTRACTION. At the showgrounds during the show “Snowy” Flynn, one of the best-known showmen at the Australian shows, will be staging his big attraction. The performers will include such notables as .Jack Leahy, champion Tasmanian log-chopper; Victor Thompson, champion heavyweight wrestler; Sandy McVea, aboriginal bantamweight boxer and wrestler; and Fred Smart, heavyweight American Negro. Local champions will be invited to “mix it” with the Australian champions with the axe or on the mat. The show has met with tremendous success everywhere it has appeared in New Zealand, and Stratford should be no exception, Not only have the boxing and wrestling games had many able exponents here now and in the past, but this district has also produced some of the best of axemen. These facts should incite much interest in the band of athletes under “Snowy” Flynn’s direction, and should lead to large numbers of likely lads from both town and country visiting this show to see what they can do, and perhaps to have a little “flutter” themselves in any of these games they fancy. During Show Week you should not miss the opportunity of getting some of those splendid shilling writing pads from Wilson Bros., Stationers, Stratford The cabinets of notepaper and envelopes at 1/6 and 1/9 will probably interest you too. Ask to see them. Don’t forget the address—opposite P r A.C, Auction Mart,
