CIVIL SERVICE PAY.
THE PROPOSED REDUCTION STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. By Telegraph—Preu Association. Wellington, Last Night. Interviewed to-day, the Premier said Cabinet had l>een too busy to consider the details of the retrenchment in the civil service; even the suggested 10 per cent, reduction was only tentative. This, or whatever percentage of reduction was finally determined upon, would probably apply to all salaries where the salary itself has been increased, but where an increase has been made by way of a cost of living bonus whatever reduction may take place must correspondent with the reduction in the cost of living. The percentage decrease in cases of an actual increase of salary would not necessarily be based on the cost of living. It would not be necessary to go back to the 1914 wages and salaries. It was not intended to depart from any undertaking given by the Government in regard to the reduction of wages and salaries.
