RIOTS IN BOMBAY.
MOBS STONE EUROPEANS. SHOPS SET ON FIRE. RIOTERS OUT OF CONTROL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Delhi, Nov. 18. There were most serious riots in Bombay concurrently with Gandhi’s nonviolence speech. The cars of Europeans were stoned by the mobs, tram-cars burned, and shops in the bazaar set on fire. Gandhi exhorted the Crown to liberate next month the Ali brothers and others sentenced at Karachi. Received Nov. 20. 5.5 p.m. Delhi, Nov. 18. During the Bombay riots the rioters barricaded the streets and hurled stones from the housetops. Several bayonet charges were necessary. Besides four killed, thirty police were injured. The rioters’ casualties are unknown, but they are considerable. Two hundred were arrested. The night passed quietly. No trama are running to-day. Ghandi is much perturbed over the outbreak. He declared he was chiefly instrumental in creating the spirit of revolt, and now found himself incapable of controlling and disciplining that spirit. His campaign would prove unsuccessful unless he was able to generate a complete spirit of non-violence. Ghandi proposes to observe a weekly fast of twenty-four hours as a penance. Ghandi points out that non-co-opera-tors are pledged to protect the Prince of Wales from harm and insult. Hartals have been declared throughout India in connection with the Prince’s visit. *
