KAPONGA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) It has been felt here for some considerable time that the affairs of this growing district suffer somewhat from a lack of organisation. For some years we had a tradesmen’s association, which did good work. The weakness there, of course, was that the membership was limited to the shopkeepers. What seems to be required is a body representative not only of the employers (shopkeepers) but also of the employees, and last, but not least, of the farmers. To discuss this important matter a meeting is to be held on Tuesday next. One suggestion to be offered at the meeting will be that a chamber of commerce be set up locally. On Friday afternoon last a very pleasant hour was spent by the ladies of Kaponga at the local school, the occasion being an impromptu open-air concert given by the pupils in aid of the school cricket club funds. Items were given by all the classes, and at the conclusion afternoon tea was handed round by the. children. The assembled mothers were true “sportsmen,” for, after making toffee and sweets for the children’s stalls and the wherewithal for refreshments, they parted, up with a smile when the ‘‘man with the bag” passed round. The thanks of the cricketers were expressed .by Master Clennel! Kehely, captain of the club. The enterprise of the children, especially the girls, was rewarded by finding the cricket fund augmented by £5 10s. Later a donation (per Mr. Morgan Priest) of £2 17s was received, this being a balancd from a combined hockey and football social held some time ago.
