PARLIAMENT.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES REPLIES TO QUESTIONS. f . ' TARIFF AND LICENSING. > ~ By Telegraph.— Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. Replying to Mr. D. G. Sullivan (Avon), Mr. Massey said he could give his assurance that the recommendations of the tariff Commieirion had not been materially departed from in framing the tariff, but of course adjustments were being made from day to day, and these adjustments he regarded as improvements, not in the interests of the protection of free trade, but in the interests of the country. He could not say whether the report of commissioners would be laid before the House until he had an oppor* tunity of consulting Cabinet. Replying to Mr. R. McCallum (Wairau), Mr. Massey said there would be no licensing legislation this session, but he was prepared to set up a committee this session to go into the whole question and report to the House. The committee would be thoroughly representative of opinion in the House. Replying to Dr. H. T. Thacker (Christchurch East), the Hon. G. J. Anderson said he hoped to introduce the Shop* and Offices Amendment Bill next week.

Replying to Mr. W. S. Glenn (Rangitikei), Mr. Massey said he did not think the House had yet heard the last of the racing commission’s report. He regarded the report as a very admirable one, and it would be useful for other purposes. He wished, however, to make it clear that the Government did not intend introducing further legislation this session. The House, at 5.5 p.m., passed on £ci th & orders of the day, when the Premier . rose to reply to the debate on the Budget (reported elsewhere). The House rose soon after 9 p.m. till 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
