A Tokio message says that it is learned from reliable sources that Prince Hirohito may by vote be made Regent, on account of the Emperor’s health, the state of which the Press is forbidden to discuss.
A cable from London says Dr. John Smith had been nominated as Moderator elect of the Church of Scotland. The Rev. David Fraser, of has been nominated moderator of the United Free Lnurch. The latter was for twenty-five years a missionary in Africa.
The Prisons Board arrived in New Plymouth last night on their tour of inspection. The members of the board are Mr. C. E. Matthews (Undersecretary for Justice), Dr. F. Hay (Inspector of Prisons), Mr. W. Reece, Mr. E. Hall and Mr. J. Smyth (secretary).
A London cable says General Borlase Childs succeeds Sir Basil Thomson at Scotland Yard. General Childs, when Assistant Adjutant General in France, inaugurated the soldiers’ twelve days’ Christmas leave and was the author of the Suspension of Sentences Act. The resignation of Nurse M. Shine, district nurse at Uruti, to take effect from the 25th inst., was received at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board, and accepted with regret. Nurse O. Ennis wrote resigning her position as from the inst. Miss Sheila MacKenzie also sent in her resignation owing to ill-health, but asked to be placed on the waiting list, as she would be prepared to take up duty again in six months. Her request was acceded to. Three months’ leave of absence was granted to Nurse Mona Corkill owing to ths ill-health of her father
