MANAIA.
PROPOSED CATTLE SHOW. (From Our Own . Correspondent.) The proposal to hold a cattle show in Manaia was brought under the notice of the Waimate Horticultural Society on Monday evening by a deputation from the Manaia branch of the Farmers’ Union, comprising Messrs. J. Dakers (president). A. Gamlin, and R. G. Muggeridge (secretary). Mr. Dakers stated that at a recent meeting of the branch it was suggested that that body might work in conjunction with the Horticultural Society at the flower show to be held in February. The effect of a cattle show being held locally would be to bring into prominence a quantity of pedigree stock, the owners of which had not ventured to take it to Hawera, because they did not know whether it was good enough to be shown there. With such a show in Manaia, l a market might be secured for this stock without prospective purchasers having to go out of the district. The union was prepared to do any work connected with the proposed show, also to procure hurdles, and to allot the prize ; money out of the entrance fees. Mr. E. Long said he did not think it would be possible to hold a cattle show on the same day as the flower show.
Mr. E. Burke and other members of the society pointed out that, while the society was, no doubt, sympathetic with the request, its programme was full, and it would be better for the union to hold the cattle show on a separate day.
After discussion Mr. Dakers said he realised that it. was quite possible for the Farmers’ Union to run a show. In thanking the society for the reception accorded the deputation he said that the union would try to carry on with the scheme, and would perhaps come to the society for assistance later. He invited members to attend a meeting of the branch to be held on Friday evening to discuss the matter.
The society passed a resolution thanking the Farmers’ Union for having approached it on the question of holding a cattle show, and promising its assistance if a separate show were held.
It was decided to delete from the schedule of the February show the cowjudging class (boys under 16), in view of the possibility of the Farmers’ Union establishing a cattle show.
