FUGUE OUTBREAK.

POSITION IN AUSTRALIA. MANY FATAL CASES. FEARS IN SYDNEY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A statement regarding the outbreak of plague in Australia was made in the House this afternoon by the Minister of Health (the Hon. C. J. Parr). He said the position in Queensland was somewhat serious. There had been forty cases in Brisbane, twenty-one proving fatal, and it was now taking a severe pneumonic form. Infected rats had been found iu Sydney, but so far there had been no fatal cases there. The health officers were, however, alarmed, and feared its spread during the worst months, which were April, May and June. The position was regarded as so serious by the New Zealand Public Health Department as to warrant the issuing of an order that all shipping coming to our ports from Australia must be fumigated before leaving the Commonwealth. This might cause some inconvenience, but it could not be helped. Precautions were being taken in our ports. Many rats had been examined bacteriologically, but so far no traces of plague were discovered. At the same time he could not neglect’ repeating the information uttered some weeks ago, and again asking local authorities (who had a duty in this matter) and private individuals to reduce the menace by putting their house in order. REPORT FROM BRISBANE. THIRTY-ONE DEATHS. THREE TOWNS AFFECTED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 15, 10 p.m. Brisbane, Nov. 15. Two more deaths have occurred from plague, making the total deaths in Brisbane nine out of twenty cases. At Townsville there have been twentyfour cases, fifteen of which have proved fatal. At Cairns there have been twelve cases, of which seven died.
