GREYMOUTH BAR MISHAP. ) TOTAL LOSS FEARED. ; CREW LANDS SAFELY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Greymouth, Last Night. The steamer Perth, of 1111 tons, owned by the Melbourne Shipping Company of Australia, became stranded, when crossing the Grey bar outwardbound for Melbourne at nine o’clock this morning. a cargo of 878,000 feet of timber. South-westerly seas forced the vessel round broadside fifty yards beyond the north tiphead, the breakers coming over her. The crew of 26 and Captain McDonald all came ashore in lifeboats at 10.20 a.m. The scene is that of several former wrecks. It is feared the Perth will be a total loss. The hull, pivoted amidships on a hard bottom, was swinging in response to the impetus of the breakers till the tide fell. The insurance is nc ; yet available. Wellington, Last Night. The Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department (Mr. R. B. Morris) has received the following information from the chief postmaster at Greymouth: “The Melbourne Steamship Company’s steamer Perth, loaded with nine hundred thousand feet of timber, and bound for Australia, went ashore on the north tiphead at Greymouth 945 a.m. on Sunday. The vessel badly holed and lies in a bad position close to the shore." All the crew are safely ashore.”
