WAITARA.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Nov. 11. The monthly meeting of the Waitara School Committee was held on Monday last, Mr. T. R. Ford presiding. The inspector’s report on the recent examination disclosed a very satisfactory state of affairs. A resolution was passed congratulating the staff on the results achieved. The acting headmaster reported that the attendance was keeping up well, an average of 300 being obtained during the last four weeks out of a roll number of 325. The King’s wish to observe two minutes’ silence on Armistice Day was acceded to. In connection with the annual prizes, Messrs. Ford and Nosworthy were deputed to arrange for same. The matter of providing an asphalt tennis court in the school grounds for the ; girls was brought forward. A suitable site, and the cost of same, are to be looked into. It is expected that the cost could be met from the proceeds of a concert, swimming carnival, etc. The new headmaster of the Waitara School (Mr. Swinbourne) takes up his duties on Monday next. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The usual monthly meeting was held in the council chambers on Wednesday yight last. With regard to the local bodies Bill dealing with the extinction of bank over- ■ drafts by raising special loans, it was re- j solved that it be a suggestion to the Gov- • eminent that, ten years at least be the time j within which the loan should be paid off out of current accounts. Mrs. Wyllie, who is leaving the district, asked the council if they would allow her ' for the cost of an electric meter obtained about a year ago.—Left in the hands of ' the lighting committee. It was resolved that the thanks of the j council be conveyed to those who assisted ! in any way during the Vice-Regal visit. : Special mention was made of the Band j and Bowling Club. ; At eleven o’clock on Friday morning the 1 townspeople remained silent for two min- • ures in observance of the anniversary of the i armistice. The freezing works sounded • their whistle as the signal.
