Or dera for papers may also be left with them. HOSPITAL BOARD. Nov. 8. The monthly meeting of the Stratford ' Hospital Board was held to-day. Present: Messrs. E. Marfell (in the chair), P. Thompson, C. R. Finnerty, J. T. Belcher, G. P. Harkness, and J. O’Neill. Mr. Marfell referred to hte illness of Mr. C. D. Sole, chairman of the board, and of Mr. T. H. Penn, secretary to the board, and on his motion a vote of sympathy with those two gentlemen was carried. A letter was received from the Department of Health drawing attention to clauses which have been repealed in thfc new Health Act and the Counties Act of 1920. Clauses have been repealed which gave powers to county councils to contribute towards the erection, establishment or maintenance of a hospital or' to relieve the sick, aged, infirm or poor, or to give grants or pay salaries to institutions or persons for the purpose of public health. The resignation of Miss E. Dawlin from the nursing staff was accepted with regret. The acting medical superintendent (Dr. Sowerby) reported that during the past month 30 patients were admitted and 23 discharged, leaving 23 in hospital at the end of the month. There were two deaths. Five operations were performed. There were three soldier nad 27 civilian outpatient attendances. There were 6 cases in isolation.
The monthly report of the matron (Miss S."G. Beedie) stated that a new probationer, Miss Dorm a Black, had been engaged to take the place of Miss Dawbin. Miss M. Wood would be unable to resume duties for some weeks, owing to illness. Miss E. Symes had completed her term of probation, and was recommended for further training. A letter was received from Mr. C. D. Sole, commenting on the excellent work of the doctor and staff at the hospital. Messrs. Thompson and Finnerty were appointed a temporary visiting committee during the illness of the chairman. PLUNKET SOCIETY. A meeting of the Stratford branch of the Plunket Society was held last Wednesday. Present: Mesdames Cuthbert (chair), Abraham. White and Finch (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Dr. Doris Gordon and Mesdames Barr and McMillan. The nurse's report for the month stated that during October there were thirteen new cases, making a total of 107 on the books. Seventy-three adults and 53 babies visited the office and 80 visits were paid to homes. Inglewood was visited four times. There were 30 babies on the books, and 3 new cases, whilst. 25 adults and 23 babies visited the office. Twentyone visits were paid to homes. The A. and P. Association’s offer of a marquee as a rest teat for mothers at the show was accepted with thanks. On Show day a demonstration on "The Making of Mother’s Milk’’ is to be given, commencing at one o’clock. Donations were received from Mrs. Mark, £l, and Mrs. Rich. ss.
’ A cable message received in Stratford , that Dr. Steven has booked his passage , for his return to New Zealand, and will i sail from Loudon by the Aquitania on December 3. He will journey home via America, and should arrive in Wellington ! by the Tahiti from San Francisco about . the end of January. I Air. Henry Wilson, who was at one time I a well-known resident of Stratford, and now resides in Wanganui, is at present on a visit to this town. GENERAL. The opening of the Stratford Tennis Club’s season, which was postponed last Thursday on account of bad weather, will take place next Thursday. The courts are in good order, and prospects point towards the season- being one of the most successful that the club has ever experienced. Over twenty new members have been en» rolled, and the beginning of the season is being eagerly looked forward to. It is rumored that the opening ceremony on Thursday may be followed by a dance. Last month the Borough Council gave two building permits to a total value of £1350. Although to-day was all that could be desired from the point of view of the weather, there was only a small number of visitors in town, and business was not very brisk. But if the Business men should experience a slack time at the beginning of the month, this should be more than made up for during show week. It is reported that good entries are being received for the show, which is bound to bring increased business to the town, and probably some of the country people are leaving theii usual visits to Stratford f until this A large number of boys of the Stratford Technical School were taken out to Mr. Frank Ranford’s place on Opunake Road to-day and given a practical lesson in judging cattle. The first practice of the Stratford Cricket Club was held to-night at Victoria Park. All who are interested and would like a game should communicate with the secretary, Mr. W. Grubb. The first match will be on Thursday, when a team will meet , Eltham at Eltham in the first game of the Thursday competitions. A match has also been arranged against Midhirst at Stratford for next Saturday. It will soon be time to get your Christmas mail away to the Old Country and readers are advised to order their private greeting cards in good time. A splendid range of sample cards can be seen at Wilson Bros., Printers and Stationers, Stratford, and orders placed with them will be completed promptly and carefully.
