MISHAP TO LAUNCH.
FIVE DAYS’ EXPOSURE. THREAT OF STARVATION. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Blenheim, Nov. 7. E. J. Short and J. W. Nelson, Wellington fishermen, came ashore in a small launch on the Kekei*angu beach on Sunday morning suffering severely from exhaustion and starvation. it appears that they left Nelson on Tuesday last for Island Bay. When near Tom’s Rock the engine broke down. The only food on board was a loaf, a pound of butter and a few mussels. There was no water. During the rough weather a small sail was set. The launch beat up and down .mrast., but was unable to make a landing. The men signalled , with flares, but were unable to attract the attention of passing vessels. The men managed by means of a kettle, kerosene tins and tubing to distil sufficient water to keep them alive. Eventually a favorable wind allowed the launch to anchor off Kekerangu. Nelson had a narrow escape from drowning while atempting to swim ashore, but succeeded in reaching the beach. The other man collapsed in the launch and great difficulty was experienced in getting him ashore. Both men are recovering.
