ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) November 4. Despite the boisterous weather prevailing -on Thursday afternoon, a good number of tennis enthusiasts were present at the courts. Mr. C. P. Baker (president) declared the courts officially open, and afternoon tea was then served in the new pavilion. This club is in a sound financial position this season and it is intended to expend another £lOO on improvements to the pavilion and grounds. In the evening the chib held a very enjoyable dance in the Oddfellows Hall, and it is expected that the takings will materially assist the club’s finances. , A report to the effect that ‘•Billie’ Preston had been injured and would be unable to fulfill his meeting with Stewart Smith has been proved incorrect. The Boxing Association to-day received a message from Preston’s mar‘'•ger stating that the former was as fit as ever. The Elf ham Association confidentially look forward to a record tourney on the 23rd inst., and doubtless die professional bout will draw from the whole of the North Island. Both contestants have brilliant records. Smith, the vanquisher of Jack Keenan, and Preston, who has beaten Mick Rutherford, have many “scalps” to their credit, so that' a good willing bout may be expected.
