AUCKLAND EAST ELECTION.
THE PREAIIER GRATIFIED. By Telegraph--Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 3. Air. Massey, speaking about the Auckland by-election, said he was naturally gratified that Air. Mackenzie had put up a good fight. He 4eserved to win. Mr. Massey expected to hear the old story about a minority victory, but believed the result would have been the same had there been only two candidates. He looked upon the fact tlmt three by-elec-tions in succession had come to Government candidates as a vote of confidence in the Government and an expression of the intention to support the Government in the very difficult duties which held been forced upon them by the existing financial stringency.
