COWARDLY ATTACK.

POLICEMAN STRUCK BY STRANGER. A cowardly assault on a policeman who was performing his duty is reported to have occurred on Saturday evening, in Adelaide Road, Wellington. A man, who is in custody, is alleged to have been using obscene language when accosted by the policeman, who attempted to arrest him. He resisted, and a rough-and-tumble ensued, several spectators offering no assistance. During the struggle an unknown man approached and struck the constable a heavy blow on the back with a piece of wood. Nothing daunted, the policeman “attended” to two men instead of one, and as another constable approached the assailant with the slick took to his heels. The alTair was only a. matter of a few minutes.
