JUDGE’S COMMENT ON JURY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Nov. 1. In the Supreme Court, David Irwin was charged with th&ft from the person. Accused conducted his own defence. He described the evidence against him as contradictory and Mr. Justice Adams, addressing the jury, said the case was a simple one. There was no evidence to contradict the Crown’s case. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty after 30 minutes’ retirement. The judge remarked that the prisoner was -fortunate in the selection of the jury and discharged the jurors in the case from further attendance during the present session. CHILDREN AND CINEMA. Christchurch, Nov. 1. The City Council last night discussed a proposal for the better protection of children attending picture shows. The matter was brought forward in correspondence from the Society for the Protection of Women and Children. After a lengthy discussion a resolution was adopted that, in view of a recent ease, the by-laws committee be requested to consider the report whether it is not desirable that picture theatres be better lighted and closer supervision given, also that special seats be set aside for children unattended by adults. BANKRUPTCIES IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, Oct. 31. During October there were three bankruptcies in Wellington, making a total of sixteen for ten months of this CARRIAGE OF PETROL. Auckland, Nov. 1. A stop-work meeting of the Auckland branch of the Seamen’s Federation, attended by 200 members, passed a resolution strongly protesting .against the abrogation of the regulations as to shippers of petroleum and the instructions to engineer surveyors to permit local passenger ships to carry a quantity of petroleum equal to the number of tons allowed by the ordinary deck cargo license, calculated at 26 cases to the ton measurement. The meeting demanded that the regulations be no longer tinkered with, and that the whole of the recommendations of the commission on petroleum cargo which were subsequent to the Tainui disaster, be put into effect.
