EMPLOYERS’ ASSOCIATION.

NEW SECTION FORMED. RETAILERS AMALGAMATE. At a special general meeting of the Taranaki Employers' Association last night, a retailers’ section of the association wa. formed. The meeting, which drew a fair attendance of members, was presided over by Mr. P. E. Stainton, president of the association, who said the proposed formation of a retailers’ section of the Employers' Association was the outcome of a desire on the part of the retailers to avail themselves of the strength of the Employers’ Association to advance their interests. It was felt that the existence of the two associations was merely double-banking. A committee set up for the purpose had drawn up rules which were submitted to the meeting for confirmation or otherwise.

With minor amendments the rules were adopted with little discussion. Mt. P. J. H. White said he wished to move that the first business of the retailers’ committee be to decide which day in the Christmas week should be observed as the half-holiday.

Mr. F. E. Gadd said that this matter should be left to the committee provided ‘for in the rules just adopted. Mr. Stainton thought that an informal discussion would do good, although any final decisions would rest with the committee.

A general discussion followed as to the most suitable days on which to observe the holidays, the matter being complicated by the fact that this year Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on Sundays, and that there was some uncertainty as to the provisions of the Shops and Offices Act in such a contingency.

No final decision was arrived at, and the matter was left to the committee to be considered at as early a date as possible. The appointment of the retailers’ committee of twelve elected at a previous meeting to form the committee of the new section was confirmed.
