THE V.R.C. DERBY. DESCRIPTION OF RACE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrigtt. Melbourne, Oct. 31. The Herald states: “The Derby is easily described, as the favorite never looked like being beaten. She had a. good run throughout and no interference. Lewis established an unbridgeable gap at the turn. Honey Bee was knocked back and ran erratically, though be was fourth. 1 The Sydney Telegraph states: "It was the best dressed Derby day in every way; perfect weather was a good setting off for the frocks. Furious was everybody’s favorite, particularly since the improvement shown at Melbourne. She remained at, the leaders' heels till the straight. The race was won at the distance.” BRITAIN’S NEW BETTING ACT. London, Oct. 28. Trustees and executors are being inundated by bookmakers with claims for repayment un-. der Judge Sutter’s decision. Thousands of pounds have already been refunded, and the bookmakers are consequently claiming taxation refunds. The Daily Express understands that a member of a Jockey Club proposes to introduce a Bill in the House of Lords excluding cheque payments of bets from the 1835 Act. AMYTHAS SCRATCHED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christehurct', Oct. 31. Amythas was scratched for the Stewards’ Handicap at 11.15. A.R.C. RE-HANDICAPS. Auckland, Oct. 31. The re-handicaps declared in connection with the events to be run at the A.R.C. spring meeting were:— Trial Hurdles, Monte 10.3; Hunters’ Steeplechase, Snake 10.8; Hobson Handicap, Stammer 7.11; Flying Handicap, Gold Kip 9.5. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Today is Melbourne Cup day, and the time-honored race promises to attract a big field, and so well it might, for there are 8000 sovereigns dangling in front of the owners whe are lucky enough to get their horses to the post. Ever since the publication of weights for the Cup the public has solidly supported the 'Stralian idol, Eurythmic, for the race, evidently regarding him as a better horse than Poitrel, and the equal of Carbine. The latter few New Zealanders will subscribe to, and at all events it is a dangerous thing to compare tlie champion of 1890 with those of 1921. Should tlie favorite taste defeat, which will
be the fortunate one? Not Kennaquhair, who has recently failed to run up to last year's form. Possibly the imported Violoncello, who unexpectedly proved himself a stayer in Caulfield Cup, which victory mulcted him in a ten pounds penalty. Then there is David, a proved stayer; and Erasmus, who filled th>.role of runner-up last year, and who is on the up-grade again now. Ethiopian, who has s.mewhat of a New Zealand connection, 'i» weighted up to better form than he has displayed this spring, and Tangalooma's defeat in the Caulfield was complete. Of those lower down the scale Wirraway, Pelaw Main, Furious and Lionel Attwill read best, and of these Furious (witli only 7.2 on her back), may stay muck: better than she did under Derby weight at Randwick. Summed up, while admitting that Eurythmic is a great horse, he may find it hard to concede so much weight to. Erasmus and Furious over such a. trying course to-day. Tii© following uuares have foaled to Absurd recently;—Mascot, a colt; Prosy, a filly; Sea E'lf, a cult, full brother to Mcnnin; and Flora McDonald, a filly. Unfortunately the latter foal was born blind, the eye sockets being practically empty—a very rare occurrence. |Mr. Geo.' Currie is fortunate, for in addition to the Sea Elf colt be possesses a colt out of St. Ursula, and fillies out of Yes (imp.), Pennon and Liquify.
