GISBORNE SHOW. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, Oct. 25. The Poverty Bay A. and P. show was opened in unfavorable weather, a cold wind, with occasional heavy showers, prevailing. The total entries numbered 1352, one hundred more than last year. Only a few horse classes and a few sheep classes were judged. The Romney cup was won by A. Kirkpatrick, and the Lincoln cup by G. V. Smith. SLACKNESS IN COAL JSHNES. Westport, Oct. 25. A meeting of the Bullei Progress League to-night resolved that owing to the increasing idle times at the coal mines, and so far as can be judged practically no improvement in the near future, the Government be asked if existing foreign contracts cannot be cancelled by paying reasonable compensation, or, if that be impossible, that importations be delayed. THE AUCKLAND BY-ELECTION. Auckland, Oct. 25. Messrs. Mackenzie, Russell, Lee and Foster have been nominated for the Auckland East by-election. CHARGE .AGAINST LAND AGENT. Invercargill, Oct. 26. At the Police Court Janies H. Brass, land agent, was charged with having fraudulently omitted to account for £2OO received by him to pay another. Accused was arrested in Melbourne and returned by the Paloona. He was remanded for a week.
