STRATFORD

BTRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news fo. publication in tte Taranaki Daily News should be left at the office of our local representatives, Wilson Bros., Broadway, Stratford. Orders for papers may also be left with them. GENERAL ITEMS. October 24. Stratford of late has been having more than a fair share of bad weather, and the last week-end has been exceptionally wet. A very large number of residents were looking forward to a fine day to-day, but they were disappointed, as to-day has been one of the worst experienced for a long time. Heavy rain set in this morning and continued throughout the day, without a sign of a change. There were a number of holiday attractions offering had the day been fine. Ngaere Gardens would have presented a very animated and jolly scene with extra features specially engaged to amuse the picnickers. The Waverley races would also have drawn a larger quota of Stratford people. There were good crowds on both the early special and mail trains, but when the 10.15 train left it was very apparent that the weather would be wet all day, and so there were few passengers on board. The proposed bowling tournament, which was to have taken place at the Stratford green, was abandoned, and the heavy rain is likely to prove a set-back to both bowling and tennis courts. The very thorough soaking which the bowling greens have received will leave them wet and soft for some time, and the season will be a week or two later in starting than was intended. The same applies to lawn tennis courts.

Show time is drawing quickly near, and members of the A. and P. Association are on the look-out for entries from all over the district for the various competitions Very complete arrangements are being made, including several improvements to the show pens, buildings and fittings on the ground, and the show should be one of the most successful held here.

The activities of the authorities in enforcing strictly the by-laws relating to traffic have resulted in many less breaches being observed. For a while a large number of motorists who had neglected to see that their tail-lights were working properly were brought before the Court, and then attention was given to the rounding of corners by vehicles, and this time the drivers of carts and horse-drawn vehicles who carelessly came from Regan Street into Broadway and ran into the arms of an official who was exceedingly anxious to know their names and addresses. In both these breaches of the by-laws there were only nominal penalties inflicted to serve as a warning to others, but continued carelessness will bring heavier penalties. The authorities are very much on the alert just now.

There was a good crowd in town on Saturday, despite the uncertainties of the climatic conditions, and, what is more, business was more brisk than it has been for some time, probably because the September milk cheque came to hand last week It is stated that a good deal of money changed hands, which is more than could he said for many a Saturday or Tuesday past. With -many of the factories at present handling more milk than they did, in the flush of last season, the prospects do not look so black as many pessimists paint them.

The large number of satisfied users of the Corona Portable Typewriter is the best advertisement the machine could have. It is ideal for secretaries, ministers and all business men.
