THE NEW ZEALAND UNION. At the recent annual meeting of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union the question of the revision of rules for wood chopping events was considered. The subject was introduced by a motion proposed by Mr. Edwards (Poverty Bay) as follows: "That a block must be chopped off clean with axe; any competitor pushing block off with his hands will bo disqualified.” The mover said he would like a definite ruling regarding this remit. At Gisborne, at the world’s championship chop, a man, had gut down from his block, but it did not break, and he had pushed It through with hla hands. They had searched the rules, but they could not find any ruling on this point, lie thought that a sub-committee should be set up to revise the existing rules.
After discussion it was decided that the rules in regard to these classes be revised. in the course of his address the chairman (Mr. J. Kennedy) said that the. question of resuming the big cycling races, such us the Timaru-Christchuich race, and the round-the-mountaln race (around Mt. Egmont), which were held annually before the war, had been considered, and it was hoped that this season both of those races would be resumed.
Mr. H. A. Nut-tall, the Taranaki delegate, was elected a vice-president of the union.
Applications for the New Zealand championship meeting were received from the North Canterbury and Taranaki Centres.—lt was decided to allow Mr. Lucas (North Canterbury) and Mr. Nuttall to come to a mutual arrangement regarding the allotting of the championship events between the two centres. The question of the locality at which the next conference should be lu-ld brought forward a number of motions, Wellington, Eltham and Blenheim being nominated.—On a vote it was decided to hold the conference at Eltham about September next year.
