Sangeter (president) was in the chair, and there were also present: Messrs. G. A. Tipler, C. Marchant, E. Walker, L. Terent, W. H. Jones, J. M. Crowe, B. Orr, M. T. Phillips, I. G. Stewart, B. E. Richmond, W. Pollock, W. H. Rutledge, R. D. C. Moore, D. N. Clarke, D. Parrish, E. Linnell, and J. M. Bowman. The secretary’s report stated that the new pig pens were in the course of construction and were waiting for fine weather to be completed. A sub-committee set up to deal with the improvements to the luncheon room reported on various improvements decided on. The meeting of the general committee being the last to be held before the annual show the executive appealed to all members of the general committee and of the association to unite with them in making the show a pronounced success. The prospects are exceedingly good and it is anticipated that entries will show an all round increase over last year. Fortunately there is every indication of an abundance of green feed and we should be in a position to meet all requirements.
The question of providing hot water for the public was discussed, and it was decided that there should be two coppers provided for public use. A 25gal. copper will be supplemented by a 14gal. copper, which has been lent by Mr. Steer.
It was decided, on the suggestion of Mr. Phillips, that a working bee should be held at the show ground each Thursday, commencing on Thursday week. The report was adopted.
Twenty-one new members were elected, making a total of about fifty new members for the year.
A letter was received from the Department of Agriculture recommending the support of the association in the matter of furthering the activities of boys’ and girls’ agricultural clubs in the district. It was decided to give the movement hearty to set up a subcommittee after the show to go into the matter. A letter was received from the council of agriculture asking for support in the direction of urging the need of economy in Government departments. It was decided that the letter should be receiveci and no action taken. •Mr. C. Moore offered to provide shavings and sawdust for bedding, etc., for the animals l . It was decided that tenders should be called for the carting of pigs from the station to the show grounds. GENERAL. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., arrived in Stratford by last night’s mail train for the week-end. He will return to Wellington on Monday morning. Mr. Masters will not be able to open the Wharehuia Hall on October 28, as was intends 1, owing to the inquiry into the alleged cement trust commencing on the following Monday. This afternoon he received the following telegram from the Nelson branch, of the Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Union:—The Nelson branch of the Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Union unanimously resolved that the Government be called upon to combat the cement combine and request the national executive to circularise each branch of its society to get the resolution endorsed and forwarded to Parliament' through each member of Parliament.
There has been some comment in the town, lately on remarks made to the effect '’’that the Borough Council employees are engaged in demolishing trees in King Edward Park to the detriment of the scenery in this beautiful reserve. Judging from the implications cast at the council one would imagine that its employees had embarked on a cruise of wholesale trimming and tree-felling, but as a matter of fact the only trimming which has been made is in two or three cases in which branches of trees have been badly paths. In a short time the two or three stunts will be overgrown with moss and unnoticeable. In each case the branch which was cut down was partly rotted and did not look safe, and it is only fair to the council employees to point out that the charges of what practically amounts to vandalism on their part are absolutely unfair and groundless.
