MR. HUGHES ESCAPES DEFEAT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Conyrigh* Melbourne, Oct. 21. Jn the House of Representatives, Mr. Bel’ (Tasmania). Nationalist, announced that he could no longer support the Hughes Government owing to the extravagance of the estimates, and he would vote for the Country Party amendment. Mr. Watt continued the debate, stating that he would vote for the Government on condition Mr. Massey-Greene was sent to the Treasury, as he could be trusted to keep a tight hand on expenditure. The fate of the Government now depends on Mr. Bayley (Queensland), a Nationalist, who the Country Party contends will desert the Government and vote with them.
The censure debate in the House of Representativeci has been adjourned until Wednesday.
It is understood that Mr. Bayley intends to vote with the Government, and the situation is saved.
